New Study Highlights Negative Aspects Of Pornography

A recent study conducted by Patrick F. Fagan, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center on Research on Marriage and Religion at the Family Research council, examined the effects of pornography on individuals, marriage, family and community, and found the extent of damaging effects pornography has on individuals and families.

According to Fagan, Pornography is a visual representation of sexuality which distorts an individual’s concept of the nature of conjugal relations. This, in turn, alters both sexual attitudes and behavior. It is a major threat to marriage, to family, to children and to individual happiness. Social scientists, clinical psychologists, and biologists have begun to clarify some of the social and psychological effects, and neurologists are beginning to delineate the biological mechanisms through which pornography produces its powerful negative effects.

Pornography is addictive. Neuroscientists are just now beginning to map the biological structures that underlie the addiction.

Users often become desensitized to a type of pornography, get bored with it, and then seek out more perverse forms.

Tricity very own fashion extravaganza

Early in 2010 Chandigarh created history as it hosted its first fashion week, the Chandigarh Fashion Week 2010. The platform gave an opportunity to many designers, both established as well as upcoming, to showcase their talents. The Fashion Week began with the ace designer brand Libas paying rich tribute to rich Bollywood tradition of designs and craftsmanship, while it concluded with a Ritu Kumar show.

Libas, Ritu Kumar, Pallavi and Bharavi Jaikishan, Satya Paul, Charu Parashar, Monika Chaudhary and many more exhibited their designs at a three-day fashion extravaganza held from January 29 – 31 at Hotel Taj, Chandigarh. Udita Goswami (actress), Shahwar Ali (model), Shibani Kashyap (singer), Simran Kaur Mundi and Shriya Kishore were among the few showstoppers, who were a part of the event.

This event was a fashion celebration laced with lots of glamour with national as well as international media coverage, where many high profile designers as well as famous Bollywood celebrities were also part. Libas brought to Chandigarh glamour and style with actor Udita Goswami and Shahwar Ali walking the ramp.

On Day 1, Libas had the Bollywood theme to its line of clothing. In other show Libas exhibited its contemporary and Indo-western men’s and woman’s line. The bridal lehengas, sarees, chaniya cholis, salwar suits etc took the breath away. The brand had recently had their -Veer’ collection unveiled by actress Zarine Khan. This collection was the culmination of the efforts of the designer duo Riyaz and Reshma Gangji over the past months.

Science Update Stem Cells and Cardiovascular Health

Thanks to a growing body of research, scientists are now recognizing that having more stem cells in ones bloodstream could be one of the greatest strategies for optimal health. For example, a number of recent studies have shown that a greater number of circulating stem cells equated to greater cardiovascular health.

Lets look at some of these studies in a little more detail so you can grasp the potential benefits of supporting your bodys natural release of stem cells into the bloodstream

In 2001, Vasa et al reported that compared to healthy individuals, people with cardiovascular problems had fewer endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in their bloodstream. EPCs are a type of stem cells responsible for the development of new blood vessels. The study also demonstrated that the EPCs isolated from people with cardiovascular problems showed less ability to migrate in tissues. The Vasa group also reported that smokers had fewer EPCs in their blood.

In 2004 Schmidt-Lucke et al measured the number of EPCs in the bloodstream of 120 individuals (43 controls and 77 individuals at risk for cardiovascular problems) and observed these individuals for ten months. At the end of this time, the authors reported that a reduced number of circulating EPCs was linked to a poor cardiovascular health prognosis.

The next year, in a similar but more extensive study, Werner et al measured the number of EPCs in the bloodstream of 19 individuals, and observed these individuals for one year. Overall, the people with more circulating EPCs experienced fewer cardiovascular problems and, conversely, the people who had fewer EPCs in their blood showed increased incidences of cardiovascular events.

Thanks to recent studies, scientists now understand why greater numbers of stem cells in the bloodstream equate to better cardiovascular health. In essence, when a tissue has poor blood circulation, it lacks oxygen. And when a tissue lacks oxygen, it releases compounds that accomplish two specific tasks: 1) attraction of EPCs into the tissue, and 2) conversion of EPCs into capillary cells. Therefore, whenever a tissue is lacking oxygen, a process is triggered whereby circulating stem cells migrate to the tissue and contribute to the development of new capillaries. This leads to greater delivery of oxygen and nutrients, thereby helping the tissue maintain better health.

When we understand that poor oxygen and insufficient nutrient delivery to organs and tissues are two of the most common underlying causes for a wide variety of health problems, it is clear that increasing the number of circulating stem cells becomes one of the most valuable strategies for maintaining optimal health.

Medicare Advantage Will Get Hit With Health Care Reform

Since even before Medicare was passed in 1965 its been a source of frustration and intense debate from The Hill to Main Street. From concierge doctors to family physicians, politicians and family gatherings, health care reform is still a tough subject to grasp.

While Andy Griffith is currently appearing in television ads explaining Medicare changes to seniors, and the White House is praising its upcoming health care overhaul, the facts of how Medicare will change still remain a bit fuzzy.

Time.com states that Medicare Advantage, will in fact be greatly affected by health care reform, causing many seniors who have Medicare Advantage plans to lose fringe benefits that are not required by law. According to the Wall Street Journal, dozens of Medicare Advantage providers plan to cut back vision, dental and prescription benefits. Some plans are eliminating free teeth cleanings and gym memberships, and raising fees for hearing aids, eye glasses and emergency-room visits.

Medicare Advantage plans will take the biggest hit when the health care overhaul starts to take effect next month, mainly because Medicare Advantage plans are privately run plans that offer additional benefits beyond traditional Medicare. Obamas health care overhaul cuts to Medicare Advantage will open up the doors for 30 million Americans who currently dont have health insurance c overage. By taking some funding away from Medicare Advantage, money can be put towards those 30 million uninsured.

Democrats say the payment cuts are fair because Medicare overpays private insurers to run the plans. The government now pays private insurance companies an average of 9% more to operate the plans than it costs the government to run traditional Medicare, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, an independent congressional agency. That allows insurers to offer richer benefits to enrollees. (Wall Street Journal Online)

As for standard Medicare plans, they will not change, a common misconception among seniors according to Time.com. In a July poll, 50% of seniors believed health care reform would cut benefits that were previously provided to all people on Medicare, and that Medicare patients will have to spend more out of their own pocket. The reality is that while Medicare Advantage will change dramatically, standard Medicare will not, according to Time.com.

The law requires Medicare to pay 100% of preventive care, which includes checkups. The law will also gradually close the Medicare prescription drug gap known as the doughnut hole.
